On Tuesday, March 5, 2013 the Oakland County Genealogical Society is pleased to present a program titled “From Ireland to Canada” by Richard Fellrath, the OCGS President. Mr. Fellrath’s presentation will focus on alternative ways to identify Irish and Scots-Irish immigrants to Canada prior to Confederation in 1867. Please join us for this interesting and informative presentation.
OCGS meets at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Road, Troy, MI 48083. It is located just north of Big Beaver Road on the west side of Livernois. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM and the public is invited. There is no charge. The Troy Community Center has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking.
The Society is in need to volunteers in the following areas:
1. We need a new librarian for our collection which is housed at the Oakland County Law Library, 1200 N. Telegraph Road, Pontiac, Michigan. Duties include visiting at least once per month, cataloging new materials, reshelving materials, suggesting new additions to the collection, maintaining the collection in place. Elizabeth Henry has been our librarian for many years, and is finding it necessary to give up the position.
2. 1890 Census Substitute Project: We are currently digitizing a new set of Oakland County assesment records and will soon need indexers for this project. Key information is typed into a spreadsheet. You may see the results of past records sets on our website under the heading "Free Genealogical Data". The data is provided to volunteers in sets of 5 or 10 pages, and there is no deadline given with an assignment. It usually takes a volunteer two hours or less to complete one set. Please reply to this message to volunteer.
3. We are continuing to transcribe our old surname books to post on our website. Surname Book One has been posted under the heading "Free Genealogical Data". The names are typed into a spreadsheet to be transformed to a website posting. Each name is linked to the chart from which it was taken. We are just completing the indexing of Surnme Book Four, we have only three more to complete. Work is in progress and Books Two, Three and Four should be posted on the website soon. Reply to this message to volunteer.
Besides our regular meetings, we fulfill our mission of education and records preservation through our Library, Website and publications projects. The more help, the more we can accomplish!
