Hello and happy Thanksgiving from the Society. We wish all our members and friends a wonderful holiday season.
Make plans now to attend our next meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the Kilgour Centre of the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit. This facility is located at 2360 Rochester Court in Troy near the intersection of Rochester Road and Stephenson Hwy, just south and west of the I-75, exit 67 (Rochester Road). It may be accessed from the first driveway west of the Rochester Road-Stephenson Hwy intersection. The topic for the meeting is, “Legacy v. Family Tree Maker,” Join us as Michigan Genealogical President Mr. Tom Koselka compares the pluses and minuses of genealogy software programs Legacy and Family Tree Maker.
There is beginner help available at each meeting, and an opportunity to pick the brains of more experienced researchers on various topics.
There are just over 150 pages left to transcribe in our surname project. You can see the results of the efforts put forth by our transcribers on the website: http://www.ocgsmi.org/free-genealogical-data/surname-books/ With only a few pages left, we hope to complete this project in 2013 and move on to other things in 2014. If you can extract information and type it into a spreadsheet for a set of five pages, reply to this message and we will send a packet with instructions by email. It takes our volunteers one to two hours to complete five pages.
Please mark your calendars for our January meeting at Christ Church Cranbrook (Joint with the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research) on Saturday, January 11. Refreshments are at 1:30 p.m.. and the program begins at 2:00 p.m.. Mr. Curt Witcher of the Allen County Pubic Library in Fort Wayne will be speaking on migration routes. This is a change from our usual time and place.
