4 February 2014:“How to Use Timelines to Enhance your Research,” Ms. Pam Warren, the Society’s treasurer
and “Around the Internet” columnist for Acorn to Oaks, will show us how to create a timeline using genealogy
software, or with a word processor or spreadsheet. Timelines may be used to solve research problems and to look at
your data in a different way.
4 March 2014:“Irish Oral Tradition: Seeking, Analyzing, and Proving!,” Mr. Dick Doherty, long time
member and past Society president, returns with another fascinating and informative talk. He believes our challenge
as genealogists is to prove or disprove the Oral Tradition we have heard. Dick explores the value of oral tradition,
using the case study format, by focusing on likely sources of oral tradition, evaluation and validation techniques, and
actual images of a variety of Irish records he has used as proof.
1 April 2014: “FamilySearch,” Ms. Wally Schlegel from the Bloomfield Hills Family History Center will address
the multitude of changes made in FamilySearch over the past few years. Ms. Schlegel will bring us up to date on
these changes as well as some of the new additions to the site.
6 May 2014: “Maps on Fire,” Mr. Ken Howe’s presentation will provide you with all that you might want to
know and more about fire insurance maps and other similar large scale city maps thereby providing you with new
perspectives on your town and city dwelling relatives.
3 June 2014: “Using Facebook for Genealogical Research,” Facebook is quickly becoming a favorite resource
among genealogical researchers for its vast networking capabilities. With the formation of many thousands of
regional and surname-specific genealogy groups, Facebook is quickly breaking down brick walls that have blocked
researchers for years – often within 24 hours of posting a query! Katherine Willson’s presentation will introduce
members to Facebook as a genealogy tool and will guide the participants through the process of efficiently utilizing
Facebook for their specific genealogical needs.
